Our Christmas Cactus tends to be, in reality, more of an Advent Cactus... Seems to start flowering right as November turns to December, blooms for a few weeks... and, more often than not, takes a break around Christmas. But the blossoms are a bright and cheery treat in the increasingly bleak and dark days, regardless of their questionable timing. I took this photograph with my phone, in not-so-good light, and the result was rather noisy and grainy. I liked the look of the pink flower against the soft "antique-y" colors of the dining room rug, so I decided to experiment a little... Rather than correct the images technical difficulties, I decided the attempt to use the grit and noise for effect; I did some selective filtering and heightened texture and grain in parts of the image, and finished the whole thing off with a judicious application of a multi-colored grunge overlay. I think the result has a nice vintage vibe... textural, lightly distressed, and just a little removed from photo-reality. This would be a pretty little accent piece in a simple dark wood frame.... looks great on a square throw pillow or an oval ornament.... and would make a pretty and unique Holiday greeting card.
