Description
1715 solar eclipse. Historical chart showing the passage of the shadow of the moon over Britain, caused by the solar eclipse of 22nd April 1715. The shadow (shaded band) passes diagonally across Cornwall, southern Wales and most of the middle and south of England, including London. The dark oval gives the size of the moon's shadow at a given time during the eclipse. This map was based on the calculations of Edmond Halley (1656-1742) and was the first show the path of totality of an eclipse. Publications like this (broadsides) were intended to make astronomical events accessible to everyday people, and to publicise the work of the scientists and publishers involved.
